On the surface, your finding doesn't make much sense, but without knowing what amplifier and speakers you are using, and what is the input sensitivity of the amplifier and the stated efficiency of the speakers, it is hard to say HOW non-sensical it is. Am I correct in thinking you are using a phono stage with 54db gain into a linestage that can add 18db gain, with a cartridge that makes 2.8mV signal? That's at least 20db more total gain than I would guess you would need. But tell us about the amp and speakers.
