RE: Is Pass Aleph Ono still good?

No, not really.

What I find weird is I read from many posters on the web that the AR PH3SE with 54dB output works well with cartridges with output way lower than the 20x2H that I'm using putting out 2.8mV.

I'm pushing the phono pre into a pre that puts out 18dB gain in balanced mode, which I am using. Even with this, the cartridge requires that I put the volume on the preamp to 60 t0 70% max to get decent volume.

If I use another table with a MM that put out 3.6mV, the volume the preamp puts out reaches decent levels with it set at about 3.

Should the .8mV difference in output from one cartridge to another cause that much of a difference in sound?

I was thinking of getting a phono preamp that has gain in the 60+ range so I don't have to turn the volume up so high on the preamp, if this makes any sense.
