Andy is correct....

Pickering, Stanton, and Grado all make or made cartridges that could only be categorized as "low output". (None of the Stanton or Pickering models are available any longer; I don't know what's up with Grado.) For example, the Stanton 980LZS has an output of around 0.3mV. Pickering made an analogous model called the XVS7500. Those were flagships for the respective companies. I own two samples of the 980LZS, and they are among my favorites. What I wonder about from Andy's post is that on my data sheet the recommended load R for the Stanton 980LZS is actually 100 ohms. This would make it technically possible to use it with an MM phono stage bearing a 47K load R plus a SUT to boost output voltage. In my case, I have a few very high gain phono stages, so I don't bother with a SUT. Stanton also made a "high output" version of the 980, known as the "980HZS". I'm guessing that one is more like a typical MM or MI in terms of output V. (Select versions of these cartridges were known as 981LZS and 981HZS, respecively.) What might make it ill advised to use a SUT is the fact that these cartridges have a relatively high inductance, compared to a typical LOMC, although still way lower than the inductance of a typical MM. And Stanton recommended 1000pF capacitance at 100 ohms load. (I've never added any capacitance in my system, and I use 1000 ohms with this cartridge.)

Also, Andy, I never heard of a "785LZE". What's that?
