Mulligan and Baker with Konitz and many others defined the West Coast sound that I came to love, once I was old enough to appreciate it, by which time they were melded into the main stream. I went to probably Konitz's last concert at the Kennedy Center a year or two ago. He was too weak to blow the sax for a prolonged period of time, so he did some of his improvising with vocals. We are fortunate to have recordings of his work and that of Mulligan and Baker and dozens of others to help us endure the current isolation. I feel a bit sorry for those who don't "get" it.
Was just listening to Mel Torme' backed up by Mulligan "Live at Mr Shorty's", I think is the title of the 2-LP album. Those two had remarkable musical empathy.
