The cardas LP is great for loosening up the suspension of a new cartridge or one that has been in storage. So if you used it and thought you were breaking in the tonearm wires, it's at least equally if not more possible you were conditioning the cartridge suspension and it definitely would sound better after that.
I would favor John's idea to use the output of a cdp playing a test cd. The higher the magnitude of the signal voltage, the better.
