This, to me, is actually a pretty awesome rig. Sounds fantastic (at least the digital) and the vinyl sounds between okay to occasionally excellent - read below.
Part of it might just be psychological. The digital part of the rig has way more volume than the analog part. Whenever I go from CD to a record I have to turn the volume up by quite a bit. For some reason, I'm hesitant and reluctant to turn the volume on the preamp past halfway, which I need to do, to get enough volume on vinyl.
I added a Singlepower MPX3 (6sn7 headamp with output) into the chain. I went from PH3SE to the SP then to the LS17. I was able to use the volume on the headamp going into the preamp to essentially match the volume of both my digital and analog sources.
I then compared record and digital on two records (D. Fagen The Nightfly and D. Grusin Mountain Dance). When I did it this way the sound quality was pretty similar. So maybe I just needed to not look at how much volume was being used on the preamp.
I did, however, remove the resisters I had soldered into the PH3SE and brought the unit back to stock 47k impedance. Not sure if this had anything to do with it or not as to what I heard.
