RE: Warming the Sound

Crazy how audio memory works with me.

I recall the Rega setup sounding quite spectacular in the past. After acquiring the VPI rig, I wasn't that impressed with the sound. It wasn't the improvement I was expecting.

I had just recently purchased the Virtuoso Ebony for the Rega and had gotten it dialed in. Therefore, I didn't want to swap out the cartridge and compare the two tables. I ended up purchasing the one the previous owner of the VPI already had installed on the table (20X2H).

However, all this was through a headphone rig.

I then got back into a speaker based rig. Set everything up and was still disappointed a bit with the VPI setup. The sound was pretty opposite of everything I'd read about both in the table and cartridge. I expected full, robust, rich, detailed, slamming sound and I didn't get that.

I swapped the Rega into the system today expecting to be in audio bliss. Instead, the sound was as if I stuck my head under the covers. Pretty horrible, actually. Dark and lifeless. Could the change in impedance of the phono pre cause this drastic of a sound change?

I don't know because all the great memories about the Rega was through a headphone rig.

A bit fed up now and am listening to streamed flac and Tidal, which sounds great.
