RE: New SL1200 or vintage Yamaha GT-2000?

You can't always rely on being able to find a really nice GT 2000 in Tokyo, unless you know someone is holding one for you before you go. They do turn up in audio stores, but it seems to me they sell very quickly. Also in many photos of GT 2000s that you see on the Internet the tonearm seems to have developed cracks in the bearing and pivot areas. I have never seen this in person, and I don't know how grave this is prognostically, but it could be a problem that you really can't fix. For these reasons I would go for the technics, although I understand your fascination with the GT 2000. By the way, you can buy a brand new technics SL 1200 G series turntable in Tokyo for about 2/3 of the US price. So I would wait until you go there before making this decision. I can give you the name of the place to find it at that price.
