After having used a Shure scale for at least 25-30 years, and having noticed the fact that digital scales are readily available for not so much cost, I went digital. I don't regret it, except I found that the weigh pan of my originally purchased digital scale was ever so slightly subject to the magnetic field of an LOMC cartridge with a very strong magnet. I've since purchased an Ortofon digital scale which does appear totally nonferrous. Meantime, I also noticed that the Shure scale is also attracted to the magnet of the same LOMC cartridge. So, the Shure scale is out of the picture, so far as I am concerned. And I also continue to use the Ortofon scale occasionally, even after having used it to set VTF, because VTF can change over time, for example if you have accidentally touched or brushed against the counter-weight while flipping or changing LPs. Of course, I am one of those with many cartridges and many tonearms, so on that basis alone I would not be without a good non-magnetic digital scale.
