For an underhung tonearm, there can be only one null point on the surface of an LP. And I agree with your implication that it would be best to select a pivot to spindle distance that places the null point at the center of the playing surface. However, this will vary for different LPs, since some use up most of the surface for recorded signal and have a very narrow run-out groove, and others are quite the opposite. The good news is that you can empirically determine where to place the pivot if you think of the underhung tonearm as if it were a linear tracker. You could make an L-shaped template that fits over the spindle and where the 90 degree angle of the "L" is adjustable to be wherever you want the single null point to be. You would then align the arm wand to be parallel to the leg of the L that is perpendicular to the radius of the LP. The Viv Float tonearms come with such a template, I think.
