RE: Question/Recommendation on MC Step-Up Transformer

According to the SS website, the recommended load resistance for the Zephyr low output is "470 ohms or greater". You can achieve 470 ohms by using an SUT with a 1:10 turns ratio into the typical 47K load offered by an MM stage. But if you use an SUT with a higher ratio, e.g., 1:20, then you're down around 100 ohms load. 10X voltage gain from the SUT is going to turn the 0.4mV output of the cartridge into about 4.0mV, which might work with the 43db gain of your MM section, depending upon the input sensitivity of downstream components and the sensitivity of your speakers, but the V out would still be only a little better than 0.5V. I have no idea about which 1:10 SUT is best, except you cannot go wrong with EMIA or Jensen or Cinemag, based on the praise of others.

Otherwise, I agree with Viridian, perhaps you would do better to acquire an MC phono stage with more gain.
