NOS Ortofon Rondo Red installed

When I was at RMAF in September, a vendor in the marketplace (Thorens dealer) had a tray of these at a price I couldn't resist. I had been running a Soundsmith Aida and found it to be often amazing but frustrating in daily use-it was harder to get set up and dialed in than any cart in my previous experience, and could certainly tell the moment a stray piece of lint was picked up. It also magnified surface noise with less than pristine pressings and I could never quite banish the upper treble edge it seemed to have on many records. I suspect none of the 3 positions available for antiskate on my Pro-ject table are optimal for this cart.

Back to the Ortofon-setup was easy once I switched from nylon washers to aluminum, every time I had the alignment locked in, that final tighten would cause the cart to shift slightly with the nylon. Right away I noticed a smooth, well balanced sound with excellent suppression of surface noise-no edgy highs here. It's sailed through my usual difficult test records for sibilance, IGD with no problem and there's no listener fatigue at all. It's a keeper, and such a bargain at the priced paid ($289 show special) that I'm tempted to contact the vendor to see if he'll sell me another as a backup.
