In this case, a Rek O Kut G-2 manual available on Vinyl Engine, everything is steel of some sort. I have some other turntables with similar setups.
There is a pit on the end of the shaft in the shape of the ball. I don't know if it was there by design or not. The manual calls for Rek O Kut #9 SAE spindle oil.
In my case I have been thinking about experimenting with alternate materials for the ball and possibly different thrust plates on the shaft. This had me wondering about oil.
Especially once the thrust plate material is non conductive I'm expecting the chance for static charge buildup on the platter to go up. I don't know how effective charge transfer between the shaft and shaft well will be since there should be a layer of oil there. Maybe if the oil were a bit more conductive.
Just considering potential options, really. I don't know if when I'd ever get around to trying this.Maybe never if I couldn't convince myself it wouldn't damage anything.
