Album playability

In another thread, I mentioned that I am just about ready to buy a new turntable.
So now I have a question regarding the playability of my albums in terms of scratches, etc.
Most of my albums I've had for almost 50 years. I like to think I took good care of them.
Never put my finger prints on the grooves and put them back in the sleeve facing up so that it wouldn't slide out. and stored properly, straight and away from heat to prevent warping.
But even with good care, some of my albums have scratches, although not deep.

I had a Dual 1209 turntable back then which was the best I could afford, but with proper adjustments and a decent cartridge I think some damage to the vinyl still occurred.
With the cost of modern turntables and cartridges being rather expensive, I'm somewhat reluctant to play an album that might have even surface scratches for fear of damaging a stylus.
So what should I be looking for on the grooves of the album that lets me know it's safe to play or not?

Thanks
