I don't know if it does any good but just removing the stylus assembly will not always work since some cartridges like the old ADC pickups used induced magnetism. The magnet is in the pickup body and it induces magnetism in a piece of iron on the stylus assembly. Demagnetizing the body here will ruin the magnet. And there are other variations on this theme where this is dangerous even though these pickups are usually linked with MM pickups.
