Especially, if not used in a balanced setup, lack of shielding could allow more noise susceptibility. If you run them then hopefully the conductors are at least tightly twisted....The twisting gives some diff mode rejection despite whether there is balanced hardware, ie the oft talked about inductive coupling is reduced by solid twists.... Personally, I shield my twisted pair as completely as possible all the way from the cart to preamp even though I'm running balanced. This has given me another level of noise rejection. The shield is especially important, I've found, with my moving magnet cartridges as the run between cart and 1st stage of preamp seem especially sensitive to electrostatic noise coupling.
