RE: AT-MONO3/LP cartridge+long phono interconnects

Read this art from the VA archives- parts of it make sense! The question, digging down a little, isn't simple. No audiophile thing is ever simple... right? People tend to think that the only significant variable is the capacitance of the cables and that's where the argument starts.
I tend to think the capacitance of the cable from the LOW OUTPUT MC cart to the transformer is of little significance due to the low impedance of the source, so it's OK to have long runs. No so long, however, that losses and resistance become factors. However, the low signal level makes these runs more sensitive to EMI.
The next frontier is the behavior of the transformer itself. Transformers are imperfect, they have stray capacitance and leaking inductance and they ring. The correct resistive load reduces the effects of ringing, obviously. The effect of capacitance is less significant in this effect, but it sure is important to have the right resistive load.
Some folks believe that capacitance on the secondary is somehow "multiplied" by the turns ratio and hence a much larger capacitance is "seen" by the cart. I don't know if that's rightly what's happening. But it may be the reason there are strong advocates for very short, low-capacitance leads from the transformer to the preamp.
Well, I've clouded the issue and told you zilch... but here's my take on it for my newly-built DIY transformer setup: Following conventional wisdom I'm using 6-inch long, tethered, low-C leads from the transformer to the preamp and a longer coax to the TT. If I had a much longer run to the TT, I'd have considered quad mic cable in a balanced configuration although it would have required rewiring my current TT-- a giant PITA. Quad mic cable commonly has more capacitance than coax , but the best common-mode noise rejection.

Also see these notes on the image from Cinemag. Careful with potential ground loops too.
