Being disappointed by first 15 years of Eric Clapton solo LP's

Skipping through "461 Ocean," "Eric Clapton," and "Slowhand," there is a lot of stuff he did just to pay the bills. Occasionally a good tune comes out but, man, it was only occasionally that he rose above the utterly mundane. By mundane I mean sausage like covers of "I Shot the Sheriff" or "Knockin' On Heaven's Door." Just one Bear's opinion. Everything else has a weird overcast of doom coming through it, somehow... maybe it was an outflow of his heroin and alcohol addictions, addictions that damn near killed him.

There are a few jewels in that era- "Secret Policeman's Other Ball" (1981) for example. Not to kvetch... but I think he hit rock bottom when he re-made "After Midnight"for the Michelob beer. After that, he came back with "Journeyman" but it was firmly in the CD epoch and I am chary about albums billed prominently as "comebacks."

None of this tarnishes a molecule of the diamond-dust encrusting his massive body of work with Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos, however.
