CD's you love and respect, I agree- no surface treatments. I clean with the same cleaner I use in my LP's (homemade distilled water/ isopropyl/ Triton blend --an trusted family recipe from my Uncle Electrovice) and a smooth-surface microfiber car polishing cloth. DVD's and CD's from the public library however occasionally require more stringent measures to render them playable. I get good results by rubbing them out with 3M "ScratchX" car polish- a super-fine liquid rubbing compound with an evanescent grit- the grit disintegrates as you rub making it impossible to burn the surface. if it's still choking, a tiny drop of WD40 vigorously rubbed on the disc until its gone, using the palm of the hand, sometimes will allow a disc to play through.
