RE: Funky phono connection

If you only need one phono, no problem, just 'abandon in place' the faulty RCA jack pair. There's nothing different sonically Ph 1 vs. Ph 2, yes? Have you gotten some Caig contact cleaner and canned air, and cleaned out the jacks and selector switches? My B&K missing channel was due to dead bug residue in the mono/stereo button!

I copped these photos from the interwebbs, this the unit? Note the RCA jacks are directly PC-board mounted via quite tall "legs". My first suspicion is that you might have had a solder failure where the legs are soldered to the PCB. That would be an easy fix if the circuit board is accessible from the bottom. Yelp a local tech who fixes generic gear- they're around, sometimes at music stores for the old tube amps.

If the RCA jacks are busted, the problem is more serious. The RCA socket assemblies at the back panel appear to be solid-plastic units carrying at least 2 jacks, maybe 4, mounted with screws to the back panel. It seems unlikely you could find a replacement for that specific connector whose dimensions match, but search the web - there are similar ones made today. Major soldering skills are needed to replace those however.

With all due respect, those RCA sockets are pure Flintstones. The rest of the amp looks fine, like mil-spec high-zoot parts. Nelson Pass recently recommended I only replace my 2 power supply capacitors after 40+ years in my Forte preamp of similar vintage, so it's worth keeping it running if the controls aren't noisy and it sounds sweet (versus a new preamp, for sure!) If so, consider replacing them and replace the phono jacks (as a minimum) with some nice RCA's -- such as the Neutrik Rean's in the link. I found them to be beautifully made, bargain-priced, and they sound quite fine in my system (thet're in my new MCT). There appears to be plenty of real-estate on the rear panel to mount new jacks, but it would involve mechanical/ electrical activities in addition to soldering. That's what I'd do in any case, but I'm on a weird Bear-jihad about connectors and wire recently.

Best of luck.
