I have two "vintage" preamps both of which have wonderful phono sound (IMHO): a Threshold/Forte 2 and a B&K MC-10 Sonata. I will live with these till my final day! Both have MM and MC capability. The Forte has a set of internal dipswitches that allow the gain of the single input stage to be adjusted for an additional +20dB, allowing for most LOMC's and it sounds exactly the same (sweet) at any gain setting. The B&K MC is done via a built-in head amplifier, a separate stage that sounds a bit dull compared to the MM input wjich bypasses it. It was not real common for receivers and integrateds to have MC capabilty in the Golden Age, that I recall. Some high-line gear did but the quality of the MC boost may be questionable.
The best on-board MC inputs I ever saw were in some of the vintage Luxman stuff. Several of their preamps had built-in MC transformers! I am running one now, salvaged from a wreck of a Lux C-120 preamp- tht was a nice sounding preamp, if you liked the Lux house sound. I built their trafo into a nice little metal box with fancy silver wire and plugs etc. It is particularly synergetic with my Dynavector XX- terrific bass. Those were good days... 40 year ago.
