RE: low vs high output MC

I've been wondering for quite some time whether these Jolida gain specs are really true. I would love to get my hands on a Jolida phono stage in order to measure its gain. I have no desire to buy one, though.

Something that many people don't seem to realize is that the rated output for cartridges can be as much as 20-dB below the maximum cartridge output when playing real LPs. I would estimate the average difference is about 12 to 14-dB for ordinary records and between 16 and 20-dB for audiophile pressings. Here is a waveform from one of my direct-to-disc pressings compared to the standard 5-cm/sec groove velocity where cartridges are rated.

What this means is that the Jolida would produce an unusually high output voltage when set to 75-dB gain. For example, suppose your LOMC cartridge has a rated output voltage of 0.3-mV. It would produce 2.9-mV when playing the LP above with its 19.7-dB transient. The Jolida's 75-dB gain setting would therefore produce an output voltage of 16.3-volts. If your LOMC is rated at 0.5-mV, the output from the Jolida would be 27-volts when playing that same 19.7-dB groove.

An even greater problem would arise from using MM cartridges with the Jolida set to 60-dB gain. A 5-mV MM cartridge would cause the Jolida to produce 48.3-volts when playing the Real Time Direct-to-Disc record above.

I would certainly like to measure the gain of a Jolida to find out if it's really as high as it's claimed to be.

Best regards,
John Elison
