You put your finger on it- a great deal of the sound of cartridges has to do with compatability with the preamp. I was on a 15 year-long love affair with the DL103 series, tried many step-up, tranformers, and finally found LOMC happiness with my Nelson Pass "Forte 2" preamplifier using its widely adjustable range of gain and loading settings.
Currently I have the last transformer I'm going to mess with- salvaged from a Luxman preamp that had a lovely MC sound. Its playing my Dynavector XX and it's quite a bit more detailed, without being overly so, than my vintage Pickering XUV/4500-q, although the comparison is a bit unequal (as are all cartridge comparisons, ecxcept for long-term living, perhaps).
