Just finished repairing and setting up a sweet old Sony PS-X50 turntable, building a DIY MC step-up, and mounting my Dynavector XX (retipped by Benz in Switzerland a couple hundred hours ago). The Dyna sits in the Sony's stiff, massive arm seems to like the heavyweight DD platform. Dialing in the VTF on this baby with adjust-on-the-fly VTA was a wonder!
Next to it on the stand is my trusty Sony PS-X55S. It's very low-mass arm is happily running a Pickering XUV/4500-q with a newish "quadrahedral" tipped stylus. Been listening to that for a year+ now, and it's smooth and sweet.
The comparison is, of course, wildly unbalanced because of the different interconnects and the presence of the MCT (home brew, trafo removed from a Luxman pre). Maybe it's all imagination anyway but, even in my modestly-resolving HiFi, the sound of the Dynavector is delicious, putting it next to what I consider a superb MM cart working at it's optimum (well... as optimally as I could get all this dusty vintage junk and DIY stuff to work...)
I'm listening to the Dynavector rig playing The Jazz Messengers 'In a Sentimental Mood' and Fambrough's bassline comes through as if I were playing it myself in the room, like live music. No one drowned out, and no thin "audiophile-y" sound- lots of guts and superb bass. The soundstage is a tie between the 2 carts; the Dyna picks up more surface noise maybe.
In the end, there is no contest- it's all about level of detail IMO. I'm going to semi-retire the PS-X55/Pickering rig for a while.
