Originally, the unipivot was a way to make an inexpensive tonearm with low bearing friction. Unipivot arms cost a lot less to manufacturer than gimbal bearing or fixed bearing tonearms of equivalent performance. I don't know why unipivots have become so expensive. I suspect the expensive unipivots today have exceptionally high profit margins. Of course, this is the case for most vinyl related components. Belt-drive turntables are very cheap to manufacturer compared to direct-drive, yet my belt-drive has a price tag of $10,500 -- and that's without a tonearm. Go figure!
