It isn't easy to get the right step-up IMO; they all have a voice of some kind. I tried expensive units like the Quicksilver transformer-- it never sounded quite 'right' (DL-103D). Plus all kinds of solid state head-amps and sections within phono preamps and only a couple head-amps have sounded decent. My Forte preamp has adjustable gain for MC's via dip-switches on the PCB and it sounds better than all the outboard SS units, Nelson Pass has a gift.
It took several tries, but now I'm enjoying a home-brewed SUT made from the transformers removed from an old Luxman preamp. It seems a particularly synergetic combination (Dynavector XX-1), playing into my SS preamp. But I got lucky.
These things are highly system dependent and there is mucho interaction between cart / SUT / phono stage. One good thing is that, in this Bear's opinion, cable becomes less significant a player using an SUT.
So I say go with a transformer, but do the careful research regarding gain/turns ratio, loading impedance etc. The AT having 0.3mV nominal output suggests the more common (?) 10:1 transformer should provide enough voltage gain, but it my want to have the volume turned up a bit. I have found in the past that the best-sounding cartridge loading varies widely from the manufacturers' and/or bloggers recommendations, so keep an open mind and a handy supply of resistors!
