Ortofon SPU with 12 inch Jelco?

Have members used an Ortofon SPU on a 12 inch Jelco tonearm?
Google provides mixed answers many positive some not so much.
I have about a thousand 1960's and 70's LP's in average to not bad condition. From what I have read those not perfect LP's would benefit from an elliptical SPU like the Ortofon SPU 1S. The SPU and arm could be had for about $1200 total seems like a good value.
