Mercury rectifiers! Gives the sound a very, ...uh,... slick and mercurial quality I bet.
A classic example of enginerds with a solution looking for a problem. I have a Hg tube here in my antique display! Mercury-vapor rectifiers were used for very high currents but they were a ridiculous pain in the butt- they had to be warmed up for a long time before appling the AC and they could flash and short-out. Taking one out of the box, the mercury would plate itself onto everything inside the envelope and they'd need to warm up for days before they could be safely powered up! The later rectifiers with Xenon gas were looked on as a godsend. Jeez- am I dating myself!?!?
I think the Aluminum/Lithium alloy headshells will sound very calming...
