The optimum weight for a record clamping device is zero. I agree 100% that clamping an LP is useful and effective, but as an engineer, I disagree with the notion of using a large mass as a record clamp. Some of these could nearly double the weight of the (platter + mat + LP). The resulting acceleration of wear on the thrust bearing can't be assessed but in any case is unacceptable. Save the thrust bearings!
My clamp is a light plastic screw-chuck jobber that had been particularly effective with squishy platter mats.
