RE: I measured the effective length and overhang of the Kenwood arm

My guess is that the alignment you achieved with the Sleeve City protractor is not precise. In other words, if you go back and look very closely at both null-point grids, you will find your Kenwood tonearm does not actually align correctly with the Sleeve City protractor.

The geometry for pivotal tonearms was established many years ago and it hasn't changed. An effective length of 215-mm with an overhang of 9.5-mm yields a pivot-to-spindle mounting distance of 215 - 9.5 = 205.5-mm. You can apply the following established mathematical equations to determine the null-points to which your tonearm can be aligned. These are established equations describing the geometry for all pivotal tonearms. From these equations you can see that the product of the alignment null-points must be equal to the difference between the square of the effective length and the square of the mounting distance. In other words:

N 1 * N 2 = L 2 - D 2

Therefore:

N 1 * N 2 = 215 2 - 205.5 2 = 3994.75

You can clearly see that Baerwald's null-points of 66-mm and 120.9-mm won't work because their product equals 66 * 120.9 = 7979.4.

By changing the offset angle, you can change the null-points, but their product must always be equal to 3994.75. Therefore you can have null-points of 60.5-mm and 66.0-mm because their product equals 3993. Consequently, if you align your cartridge to Baerwald's inner null-point of 66-mm, the second null-point will be even farther inward at approximately 60.5-mm as long as overhang remains at 9.5-mm. This alignment will provide extremely low inner groove distortion at the expense of fairly high distortion in the middle and outer grooves, especially in the outer grooves. You might get a little better overall performance by aligning for an outer null-point of about 82-mm. The inner null-point would be 3994.75 / 82 = 48.7-mm.

Good luck,
John Elison
