Canadian Broadcasting Audiophile LP's in the 1980's

Starting around 1980, Canadian Broadcasting launched a series of albums the referred to as "CBC Records SM5000 Series: The SM5000 record series presents dynamic, natural, wide-ranging and realistic full-spectrum sound reproduction." Thanks Canada!

Take a look at this list, it's all Canadian orchestras and artists and covers a fair range of program, nothing earth-shattering. The best year was 1982 when they cut a handful of half-speed mastered discs.

Unfortunately that was also the year the year the first commercial CD sent on sale... In 1982 Sony took over all the recordings at CBC with the digital PCM process. I found those early Sony (and 3M, and Soundstream) digital harsh and lacking in soundstage, just one Bear's opinion.

I found this Hayden "London" and "Clock" (schlagers, true) pushed back in the Bearcave backstock... It sounds very fine- very quiet and quite 'dynamic, natural, wide-ranging and realistic.' If you see one of these labelled proudly "Half Speed Mastered" pick it up. As far as I can see, all their vinyl after 1982 is labelled "DIGITAL/NUMERIQUE."
