It might also have to do with the fact that the new SL-1200G has three speeds: 33, 45, and 78. Furthermore, it has detachable headshells so you can have different cartridges for different grooves like 78-rpm records and 45-rpm records and 33-rpm LPs. It would be costly to add that flexibility to a VPI turntable.

I think there's no question that the new SL-1200 is the better value for the price. Personally, I wouldn't want a VPI unless it was equipped with the Phoenix Engineering Eagle and RoadRunner. Fortunately, I bought those components before they disappeared just in case I ever want to buy a VPI turntable. I bought the 25-watt Eagle 2 and the RoadRunner 2 with its built-in stylus wear timer. I'm thinking hard about buying a VPI Prime just so I can use my Eagle and RoadRunner. ;-)
