This is the best way to adjust effective length so that the stylus follows the arc. Why would you say "Don't?"

Once the stylus follows the arc exactly, you adjust offset using the null-point grid lines. You need only adjust offset at one of the two null-points after making sure the stylus follows the arc exactly. When the stylus follows the arc and offset is set correctly at one null-point, it will also be set correctly at the other null-point.
