RE: I faced the same decision earlier this year...

Like you, I think the Prime is a very nice looking and great sounding turntable. I recommended it to several friends and a couple of them bought one so I get to listen to it periodically when I visit for a listening session. However, as much as I like the Prime, one thing that bothers me about expensive belt drive turntables nowadays and that very few of them have built-in strobes and electronic speed switching. You have to manually change the belt to a different size motor pulley to switch speeds from 33 to 45. I think this is appalling when you're paying four thousand dollars or more for a turntable. Even my ten thousand dollar Sota Millennia Vacuum turntable doesn't have a built-in strobe although it does have electronic speed switching and fine speed adjustability. It came with a paper strobe disc to be used with a standard florescent light.

As far as the Prime is concerned, you have to spend an extra thousand dollars for the VPI ADS to get electronic speed switching and fine speed adjustability. Even then, you have to use an external strobe disc to set speed accurately. On the other hand, the Technics SL-1200G has built-in speed switching and quartz locked speed accuracy included in its four thousand dollar price tag. I think this is rather important because I have a number of 45-rpm LPs, which are being produced a lot these days. Therefore, if you buy a Prime, you almost have to spend the additional thousand on the ADS.

Best regards,
John Elison
