Your multi-channel system obviously has had the substantial investment needed to produce a theater-like environment. Add to that the investment in your stereo rig (separate from the HT rig.) I bet you have applied acoustical treatment for the room, to boot! That sort of arrangement is wayyyyyy beyond my financial reach, space limitations, and spousal acceptance. Also that of many audio hobbyists probably. I'm genuinely happy for you, but my choices are more limited.
My large, 50 year-old record and CD collection focused on jazz, jazz-fusion, and great rock-'n-roll was mastered 99+% for 2 channel. I also don't think I've shopped for a new album, concert video, or whatever and said "Darn! It's only available in some advanced HT sound format. That will sound like crap on my system." Full disclosure: Bearette and I don't much focus on the sound quality of movies and TeeVee, which may be the big driver.
You said the key thing, perhaps, in noting that the HT sound is good when it has been "especially mixed in Atmos or DTS-X." Stuff mastered with love and care to sound great on an advanced multichannel system, likely will.
So I'll continue to live under a mossy rock-- it's only one of my Bear-type issues! I'll revisit investing in a separate HT in a few more years when folks sell good-sounding gear for pennies on the dollar due to the prevalence of new, more advanced HT formats. Basic, klunky 5.1 stuff is for sale that way currently, but isn't worth it.
