Well, I like to set my cartridge level with the record's playing surface. If that's what you want to do, then you probably should mount the cartridge first without spacers and observe whether the cartridge is level or not. That will tell you whether or not you need spacers and also the thickness of the spacers you require. You don't need to go through a complete alignment to observe the levelness of the cartridge on the record. You need only adjust the correct tracking force. I shine a flashlight at the cartridge when playing a record to observe the reflection of the cartridge on the vinyl to check for levelness.
I own the AT33EV cartridge and I really like it. Mine is mounted in my Technics SL-1200, which has adjustable VTA. The AT33EV cartridge has an elliptical stylus and therefore is probably not as sensitive to SRA as the AT33PTG, which has a line contact stylus. I've had both in my system and I prefer the sound of the AT33EV.
Good luck,
John Elison
