In Reply to: ADC XLM MKII Improved / gold body, vs Grado Platinum V2 vs Ortofon M2Blue? posted by g_greenamyer@yahoo.com on September 13, 2017 at 19:42:20:
Looking at the pictures of the VPI Nomad, I'd guess it is medium-mass and thus not compatible with the ADC's. I run a Mkii Improved in very low mass arm and it sounds great, tracks great. If I can characterize the sound, it is very revealing because it seems ruler-flat, fast, and adds no sweeteners anywhere. I feel it is sonically in a league with modest-priced MC's; maybe it's not as "fast" but maybe some of that fast stuff is a manifestation of rising treble in MC's played through solid-state headamps. It represents a real bargain- if you have the arm for it. I found good bodies under $50 and a really nice stylus for $50. 30 cu is the accepted compliance specification from yesteryear. Read the long, intelligent commentary in the attached article.
The Grado's seem a little too shimmery in the mids, so it becomes a question of matching with the rest of your system. Those questions sometimes do not lead to satisfying long-term answers.
You might find interesting the new Audio-Techinca "VM" series- medium compliance so good in your VPI. These new models are not your father's A-T's apparently. You can get into a "Micro-line" (modified Shibata) for around $300 from a mailorder dealer who allows returns.
