I believe in damping the vinyl record as much as possible. Consequently, I use a turntable with vacuum suction to hold the record tightly to a 15-lb platter. A felt mat does the exact opposite. It allows the vinyl to float on a surface that provides virtually no damping whatsoever. Therefore, I think felt is probably the worst material for a record mat. YMMV
I had an interesting experience last month when my friend came over for a listening session. He brought several of his classical LPs and when listening to one I noticed the strings sounded a bit harsh. It then dawned on me that I'd forgotten to turn on the vacuum platter. As soon as I switched on the vacuum the strings smoothed out quite pleasantly and sound quality improved significantly.
