RE: " How does my experience stack up against what you are saying?"

Interestingly, I used an Audioquest Sorbothane record mat on my Thorens TD-126 Mk III for 20-years and I never damaged a single record. In fact, I've never heard about the Sorbothane record mat problem. Thanks for the heads-up.

Although, Sorbothane is definitely an excellent material for damping vinyl, nothing compares with Vacuum hold-down. I've owned a Sota Millennia Vacuum turntable for 14-years and it works noticeably better than any Sorbothane mat. Furthermore, Sota's implementation of their vacuum platter is amazingly reliable and trouble free. Mine has been working flawlessly for 14-years. The only other thing that might come close to a vacuum platter is a peripheral ring and center clamp, but vacuum is still the best because it distributes the pressure evenly across the vinyl surface.

If you're wondering whether vacuum really works, I had in interesting experience a month ago when I had an audio buddy over for a listening session. I noticed that the strings sounded a bit harsh and then it dawned on me that I'd forgotten to activate the vacuum platter. I turned it on as the record was playing and the strings smoothed out quite impressively. My friend was really surprised at the difference.

Best regards,
John Elison
