RE: " How does my experience stack up against what you are saying?"

So true!

We certainly want our stereo systems to sound real, but they also need to be accurate. The recording and mastering engineers are more heavily responsible for the realism part of the equation so we need our systems to accurately reproduce what the recording and mastering engineers give us.

I believe I have a reasonably accurate stereo system. I came to this conclusion after listening to a YouTube presentation from a reporter at an audio show. He had a little hand-held digital recorder and he was going from room to room interviewing the vendors. When he got to the Wilson Audio room I was shocked when I heard the Sasha speakers. I have a good friend who owns those speakers and I've listened to them on a number of occasions. The shock I felt when watching this YouTube video came from the sound I heard from those Sasha speaker. My system sounded just like my friend's system, which made me believe that I must have an accurate system if it can reproduce the sound of another speaker so convincingly.

Another way I assess accuracy is when I make digital copies of vinyl records. Since I own both the LP and the digital copy, it's easy to make comparisons. It's also easy to hear any similarities as well as any differences. As far as I can tell, the 5.6-MHz DSD copies of vinyl I make with my TASCAM DA-3000 sound exactly like the vinyl records themselves.

I've been recording vinyl records all my life and I've been comparing my recordings with the original vinyl. Hi-Res digital makes the most accurate copies of vinyl records than I've ever heard and I've heard all the different formats from analog open reel tape to cassette to CD-R to hi-res PCM to 5.6-MHz DSD. In all those cases, digital impresses me as being noticeably more accurate than analog, but 5.6-MHz DSD impresses me as being the most accurate of all.

Best regards,
John Elison
