RE: Adventures in variable frequency drives for TT motors

Thanks for posting this. It's very interesting and informative.

I met Bill Carlin through email shortly after buying one of his RoadRunner tachometers for my Sota turntable and we became friends. Unfortunately, I couldn't use his synchronous motor controller/power supply because my Sota turntable had it own special motor and controller. However, after talking to him about my desire to have speed controlled through the RoadRunner, he very generously sold me a three-phase motor with one of his prototype Condor three-phase power supplies. Now I have one of the quietest, smoothest motors I've ever heard and its speed is controlled by the RoadRunner tachometer.

The original Sota motor was an inexpensive off-the-shelf stepper motor and controller, but it drifted quite a bit during the first hour of play until it warmed up and stabilized. Now, my turntable comes up to speed immediately and remains at 33.333 from the first record to the last record I play. It really works well.

Yes, Bill Carlin is a very knowledgeable engineer and a great guy. I sure wish his power supplies and tachometer were still in production because they were very innovative and unique products. It seems that nobody else has the technical expertise to market equivalent products.

Thanks again for your post. Here is a picture of my Sota turntable with a BLDC three-phase synchronous motor and Bill Carlin's prototype Condor three-phase power supply with RoadRunner tachometer.
