eBay "Aussenlaufer" motor update.

The other day, I posted the linked inquiry.

This is an FYI for anyone interested in buying that motor for use with a 3 phase vfd...don't bother...that particular motor is probably best off left on single phase. Maybe it's great for that. I'm not interested.

Below is a recent photo of my, small but quickly growing, pile of papst motors of type I consider a candidate to be of the "synchronous" motor classification.

The one from the link, from the other day, I got from the e3bay auction, is the big one in the middle in the back.

It's definitely the beefiest, in it's construction, and also flywheel weight, I'd say I'd probably choose it based on all that but there is one glaring problem with it that just can't be overlooked for my purposes.

Of all the pictured motors, the beefy industrial ebay motor is the only one which seems to have imbalanced winding resistances. A configuration likely to not be optimal for use with a balanced 3 phase drive.

It's windings measure around 25, 32, and 57 ohms (?).

I am assuming it has been optimized more for single phase/faked 3 phase usefulness in whatever application it is used. Probably not turntables.

An interesting point of note about this industrial eBay motor is there are 4 very distinct lobes of copper "coils" visible by looking through the the end of the rotor. I have no idea if this construction feature happens to be indicative of anything related to number of poles, number of poles per phase, or anything else but it seems an interesting coincidence.

Of the remaining pictured motors, which all do seem to be of appropriate balanced 3 phase construction, the one on the right in the back is my current favorite. It has more flywheel weight than the ROK motor (back left). It also seems to be a two speed motor with 6 wire leads. I still need to think about this one as it has zero markings other than the words "hysteresis papst made in germany" cast into the rotor.

I'm still waiting for the tach to arrive which coffee_phil recommended. I also ordered a Kill A Watt and some more papst motors which haven't arrived yet. I'll know more when all that stuff gets here.
