I am using an Audio Technica AT-ART7 ultra-low-output moving coil. I don't have your VPI turntable but I really like this cartridge in my SME V tonearm on my Sota Millennia Vacuum turntable . A good friend also uses this cartridge in his VPI Prime turntable and enjoys it very much. Again, the VPI Prime is not a VPI Scout, but comes a little closer possibly.
There is another version of this cartridge called the Audio Technica AT-ART9 , which has higher output but is still a low-output moving coil. 2juki sells this one on eBay at a very reasonable price. Audio Technica seems to be producing some exceptional cartridges these days and they seem to have very good price-to-performance ratios. You might want to check them out. I think Audio Technica cartridges offer one of the best bangs-for-the-buck in this age of over-priced audio equipment.
PS. 2juki erroneously lists the AT-ART9 as a high-output moving coil but it's not. It's a low-output moving coil with 0.5-mV output, which is slightly higher than the 0.12-mV output of the AT-ART7.
