I was thinking the other night that the only reason all the "audiophile" turntables are belt-drives is that the companies making them are under-capitalized to the extent they can'f afford the budget to design, tool up, and produce a high-quality DD table. If I had to hand-make a turntable in my shop, it would have to be a belt drive. Therein lies the design horizon of the major manufacturers today: "Belt-drives have sadly limited ultimate performance, but it's all we can make."
Yes. I'm totally comfortable inflaming the decades-old debate of belt-drive versus direct drive. I have never had a belt drive TT and never will. It is getting a bit tiresome resurrecting 30 year-old units from the Golden Age so I'm glad to see Technics come to their senses. It had to be Technics... I just hope Sony and Yamaha will follow their lead and reintroduce GREAT NEW DD turntbables.
Cost? I don't need a car- I could sell the car... Yeah- that's the ticket!
