Though I have not heard it, the Fluance RT-81 TT has gotten some good remarks here. Search VA. It looks quite competent, has a nice woody retro vibe and sells for around 250 bux from Amazon (Prime if you have it). A couple clicks and you can claim your Fatherly Duty is done. And not without style- the cart is quite good (AT-95e) and the on-board phono preamp can be bypassed to use the table in a "real" hi-fi some day!
The Audioengines are a good choice. You can add a nice little 8 or 10" subwoofer and have a system with decent potential. Track Craigslist and find something like a Definitive 8" "Pro Sub" for $50. A guy gave me one for free once... A decent powered subwoofer seems essential to making those minimonitors work at all. I ran the A-E's full range with the ports plugged and the sub LP set around 80Hz. Nice integration
BTW, those little "Pyle" phono preamps are listenable, within the constraints of a system with limited resolution like my daughter's soundbar setup. Decently smooth- no glaringly awful noises anyway.
