RE: Clamping is good. Record weights are a bad idea.

I agree 100% that clamping an LP is useful and effective, for the exact reason you describe. That was a good, realistic test I hadn't heard of before; if you can find a way to post it on VA, please do!

My clamp is a light plastic screw-chuck jobber that cost $3.98, 35 years ago. I used it for years on my big "Denon" spaceship DD tables with a greenish, squishy platter mat made by some Canadian gibbonis and it works really well. I use it now with my current crop of vintage Sony's and the effect is less noticeable- I can gingerly apply and tighten the clamp while an LP is playing, and hear negligible difference.

As an engineer, I disagree vigorously with the notion of using any sort of mass as a record clamp. Some of those could nearly double the weight of the (platter + mat + LP). The resulting acceleration of wear on the thrust bearing can't be assessed but in any case is unacceptable.

Save the thrust bearings! SAY NO TO MASSIVE RECORD WEIGHTS!
