O.T., but it is ANALOG and I couldn't help but note this fine performance with the LSO, Sheila Armstrong and Janet Baker [DG Laserdisc 072 200-1, 1974] Bernstein dishes up some big-ass Mahler, I tells ya' and Baker can sure sing it!
I'll never forget the first time I "got" the 2nd symphony. I had purchased tickets late and ended up in the third row, just left of center, at the superb Benaroya Hall in Seattle for a Mahler program with Gerard Schwarz conducting. I was, in an absolute sense, blown away. The force of the opening movement washed over me and I was dumbstruck. Those tympani! During the chorale I sat there stock-still tears rolling down my face- I couldn't breathe. At one point the mezzo-soprano looked right at me and smiled, ever so slightly. I will have that moment with me to the grave.
