RE: Don't worry about the direction of the cut.

It depends on the shape of the stylus as to whether antiskating will be too low or too high when using a blank, grooveless vinyl surface.

On the other hand, I have never found a really accurate way to set antiskating and because of this, I now believe that using a blank, grooveless vinyl surface might be as good as any other method. Both Peter Ledermann and Frank Schroder recommend using a blank, grooveless vinyl surface to set antiskating. I use the antiskating dial in accordance with tonearm instructions to set antiskating for both of my tonearms. For me, that seems to be as good as any other method. In fact, when I compare it with Ledermann's and Schroder's method, it seems very similar.

However, you are absolutely correct in believing the friction of the stylus in a groove will normally be different from the friction of a stylus against a blank, grooveless vinyl surface. It's just that the two are usually not all that much different. Anyway, there is no perfect way to set antiskating that I've been able to discern.
