What does a mastering console do that can't be done in the digital domain? In other words, why can't you master a signal in the digital domain and produce a digital master. I agree that it will need to be converted to analog eventually to drive the cutting lathe, but why can't that be the final conversion before sending the signal to the cutting lather? After all, most cutting lathes use a digital delay line so why couldn't the digital master be sent to the delay line before being converted to analog to drive the RIAA equalizer and the cutting head?
That's the way I would produce a master lacquer for greatest accuracy and lowest distortion.

John Elison
