I hadn't heard that story. Platter bearings seem to be somewhat delicate, their sizes may be minimized in design to reduce rumble and lower friction, also to minimize cost of the precision machined parts. I wouldn't put much weight on your bearing- a big block of brass(or whatever) could represent a 100% increase over the original design force. It might not damage the bearing immediately but will increase wear in the long run.I use a plastic screw clamp with a little chuck that engages the spindle and applies as much pressure on the record as you wish, clamping it to the mat as desired but with an added weight of maybe 15 gm. You can set it to clamp lightly if the force causes the LP to "dish" unlike heavy weights. The Michell plastic job is similar but costs like $60 bux, shop around. [My little clamp is RatShack- set me back $4, 35 years ago, so I'm prejudiced.]
